Summary:
Sitka Seafood Market sources its seafood exclusively from small-boat fisheries in the United States. We prioritize sustainable harvest methods, traceability, and partnerships that strengthen coastal communities and protect ocean ecosystems.
Where does your seafood come from?
Our seafood is 100% domestically sourced from U.S. fisheries. Most of it comes from the rich, cold waters of Alaska, but we also partner with trusted partners fishing in sustainable fisheries in places like Louisiana, Maine, and other U.S. coastal regions.
Alaska is widely considered a cut above for its emphasis on precautionary, data-driven fisheries management and habitat conservation. Alaska’s fisheries are carefully managed using the best available science to maintain the health of the fish stock, reduce bycatch, and minimize any negative impacts to other species and the ecosystem. When we source outside of Alaska, we evaluate the status of the fishery and ensure the fish stock is healthy and that impacts on other species and the ecosystem are minimized.
We do not send seafood overseas for processing. Everything is caught, handled, and processed within the U.S., supporting local economies and minimizing the environmental impact and quality degradation of long-distance transport.
Who catches your fish?
We work with a trusted network of:
- Small-boat fishermen
- Fishermen-owned operations
- Tribally-owned processors
- Locally- and woman-owned partners
These are people who know the waters they fish, who respect the ocean, and who are committed to harvesting responsibly. Some of our fishing partners are also owners in the company, ensuring alignment of values and quality.
How is your seafood caught?
Sitka Seafood Market seafood is caught using low-impact, sustainable fishing methods such as:
- Hook-and-line (includes jig, troll, longline, and pole-and-line) — used for halibut, salmon, albacore, pacific cod, lingcod, and rockfish
- Pots — used for pacific cod, sablefish, shrimp, and crab
- Gillnet — used for salmon
These methods:
- Minimize bycatch (unintended species)
- Reduce habitat damage
- Support coastal communities by sourcing directly from fishermen and community seafood processors
What makes your sourcing different?
- Values-based selection criteria: We go beyond certifications to ensure our partners align with our mission and standards.
- Traceability: Every portion can be traced back to its source, and members receive the story behind the catch.
- Transparency: We openly share who caught or processed your fish, how it was caught, and where it came from.
